Arrival at the airport, meet our local tour leader and transfer to the ancient, bustling village of Castellammare. If you have time, you can have a walk inside the magnificent Zingaro Natural Reserve where the amazing coastal path will take you to discover wonderful coves.
Today is your first cycling day: from Castellammare you will reach the archaeological site of Segesta, one of the most important and evocative archaeological areas, famous for the grandeur of its temple with its breathtaking view. In the past Segesta was the powerful city of the Elymians coming from Turkey and was after colonized by Greeks and Romans, during the Punic War. Along the way you will taste the famous Sicilian „Arancina“ (fried rice balls stuffed with meat sauce and cheese) and the „Cassatella“ (typical local pastry consisting of a tube-shaped shell of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet ricotta cheese).
Today you will pedal in total relax! The panoramic road along the coast reveals several salt pans, the view is absolutely amazing. Along the way towards Trapani you will stop for a cannolo tasting, a deep-fried tube of pastry filled with sweet ricotta cheese, impossible to miss in Sicily! Typical dinner with Cous Cous. This dish comes from North Africa: steamed coarse-grained couscous is served with an intensely flavoured fish soup or with vegetables.
Today you will pedal in total relax! The panoramic road coast is beautiful. Before reaching Marsala, you can stop on the way to visit Mozia, a little uncontaminated punic island with an archaeological site and a private museum. After you continue until you reach Marsala where you can visit one of the local cellars where a special wine is producted: the Marsala, a dessert wine. The introduction of Marsala fortified wine is attributed to the English trader: John Woodhouse. In 1773, Woodhouse landed at the port of Marsala and discovered that the wine produced in the region was aged in wooden casks and tasted similar to Spanish and Portuguese fortified wines.
Today you will have time to visit the town of Marsala and taste some wine in one of the local wineries, or just relax. Otherwise you can cross the sea and visit one of the beautiful Egadi Islands, explore the islands, enjoy the seaside or walk. Then you can reach the town of Mazara del Vallo with a very nice centre and a “Kasbah”. Mazara is worldwide known for a bronze statue called the “Dancing Satyr”.
This hilly stage will lead you to Selinunte, the ancient Selinus, and will give you the chance to enter the interior of the Island. Leaving the flat vineyards around Marsala you will curve inland towards a softly undulating series of hill, and then down to the sea again. Olive oil tasting with the famous “Castelvetrano Bread”, the area is well known for the olive farms and olive production, you will have the chance to taste Sicilian extra-virgin first cold-pressed olive oil which is a staple in the healthy Mediterranean diet and is daily used in Italian cuisine. Visit of the archaeological site of Selinunte with its temples and ruins: the widest open air archaeological site in Europe.
Today you will cycle to reach the enchanting town of Sciacca, lying on the sea. It is famous for its ceramics, its thermal baths and its religious festivals, as well as for a large fishing fleet. A fish dinner is not to miss.
